Home Security Checklist

Security checklist is a list of precautionary steps that can be followed to save our home from burglaries. Our prime motive is to make our home not a desirable place for the burglars to peep in.

• Strong doors and hard locks are perhaps the most important precaution to be taken.
• Only the interior doors should be made of light woods. Even small window such as bathroom fanlights, skylights should be guarded by locks.
• Glass break detectors, smoke detectors should be used to track unwanted entry of intruders.
• The private tools of your family should be kept out of reach of children in the house.
• Turning off the telephone is always advisable as the noise can signal the burglars that no body is present in the home.
• Near by bushes should be cleared which can act as a hide out place for them too. Installing deadbolt locks on the main doors too ensures safety.
• Don’t hide keys outside the home in the most common places like under the door mat, behind the flower pot etc. as these places are first searched by the burglars.
• In case you are out of home for a night inform your neighbors about it.
• Don’t leave any clue for the burglars to know that you are not present in the home.
• Cancel the regular deliveries like newspaper and milk.
• Your security devices should be well maintained at regular intervals so that they perform at their best at the time of need.
• Be sure that the window and door hinges are inside the house.
• Make the use of security devices common for the family members.
• Ensure that all the family members know the techniques use in the devices in case of emergency.
• Burglars target home that seen to look empty. So be sure to make your home look busier.
• If possible switch on the lights when you are not in the house.
• Prefer to use timer switches for the same propose.
• The important and valuable documents should be preserved in a secure place or else the best option is to deposit then in a bank.
• Avoid discussing your holiday and private plans in front of strangers. If you have monitored home security system make sure that it’s working properly.

Last but not the least take sessions of your family members especially children and tell them some important tips to tackle any unpleasant situation.
